'Long Island Shores' comes with a Nashville feel

Okay, she's a country singer.

When you listen to Mindy Smith, you realize this--although she has no qualifications for being country.

Smith's vocals resemble Norah Jones', with a little mix of Michelle Branch's guitar playing, which is why some might think she belongs in the pop genre.

Even writing about her native New York, though, Smith's latest album, "Long Island Shores," has a country, religious feel, and the Nashville-based singer stays true to her faith.

Her lyrics are very poetic. In "Please Stay," she sings: "Love is a heartache/ You live, you learn it/ Take what you need/ you have won my favor."

These first few lines explain it all. This should be a "quote for the day" and be carried on for people to memorize.

"Long Island Shores" is a nice surprise for those who might not favor country music. Even those who may have sworn off the genre should give it a listen.

You have to respect Smith for her work in her music. From her, we all can learn to give one listen to a musician's song--no matter what genre it is.
