Mother arrested with kids in the car

Woman charged with DUI with kids in car

Date published: 12/23/2008

BY BRIAN BAER

A Spotsylvania County woman faces numerous charges after authorities say she was stopped for driving the wrong way on Marye Road in Spotsylvania Saturday night with three children in the car.

First Sgt. Liz Scott of the Sheriff's Office said Helen A. Shaw of Bumpass had a preliminary blood alcohol content of .23 when she was pulled over at 10:30 p.m. by Deputy C. Carey.

Shaw is charged with driving while suspended, driving while intoxicated, three counts of child abuse/neglect and two counts of assault on a law-enforcement officer.

She was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Scott said Carey responded to the Marye Road area after receiving a report of a reckless driver.

While driving, Carey noticed a vehicle heading toward him in his lane of travel. Carey pulled over to get out of the vehicle's way, then turned around and pulled Shaw over.

Scott said the driver initially gave Carey an incorrect name and date of birth.

Carey noticed the driver smelled strongly of alcohol as she spoke, and she failed several field sobriety tests, Scott said.

After Carey arrested Shaw for DWI, Scott said Shaw began to resist and pulled away from Carey.

After Carey got handcuffs on Shaw, Scott said, the woman kicked Carey and another deputy who had arrived to help.

Scott said Shaw's troubles continued when she was brought to the magistrate's office after her arrest.

"She became argumentative and vocalized several phrases of vulgarity at the magistrate," Scott said. Shaw was eventually removed from the office because of her demeanor.

"It just kind of got worse and worse for her that night," Scott said.

The children's father, who had not been in Shaw's car, picked up the children, who are 15, 13, and 8.

I do recognize sarcasm,,,I also recognize ignorance! I continue to read stories of people suing bars and others when they themselves are to blame for driving drunk so I'm not so sure that taxpayer was being sarcastic!

...arrest the farmers who grew the grain that was distilled into alcohol. Then we should shoot all the cows who produced the fertilizer that enabled the grains to grow. Why do moms get all the blame? It's tough raising kids while you are drunk.

Taxpayer... (posted by navyorchid , Dec. 23, 2008 11:25 am)
You're kidding right....The ABC store is not responsible! Last time I looked, it was legal to purchase alcohol. It is not legal to drink and drive which is what she did....she, alone, is responsible for her actions!!!
