Pollard top campaign spender

Pollard leads Crabill in 99th District fundraising

With fewer than seven weeks until the Nov. 3 election, incumbent Del. Albert Pollard, D-Lancaster, has raised more, spent more and has more money left than his opponent, Republican Catherine T. Crabill of Irvington.

The candidates are seeking election to House of Delegates from the 99th District that includes King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland Counties, plus the Port Royal and Bowling Green precincts in Caroline County.

According to campaign finance reports filed Sept. 15 with the State Board of Elections, Pollard has raised $27,698 for his campaign, much of it from lobbying groups. Crabill has raised $5,827.

As of Aug. 31, Pollard had spent $11,307 and Crabill $4,807. Pollard finished the reporting period with $16,301 in the bank. Crabill's ending balance was $1,019.

Crabill's candidacy has been disavowed by the state Republican Party and several GOP leaders because of her controversial remarks. Among other things, Crabill has said, "Our elected officials use the Constitution like so much toilet paper."

In a campaign release, Crabill said that her first official act on taking office will be sponsoring a resolution asserting Virginia's "state sovereignty" as a fact of law under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"This is as much a local issue as zoning, real estate taxes, and law enforcement," Crabill said.

Seeking his fifth term, Pollard said, "Everybody understands that this is a race between a moderate who votes his district versus a candidate who has been denounced by her own party and is running on federal issues."

According to the finance reports, Crabill's largest contributor was the 1st District Republican Party, which gave her $3,000.

Pollard reported four individual and business contributors of $1,000 or more: Edward B. Hontz of Fredericksburg ($1,500), Omega Protein of Houston ($2,000), Wayne Thorpe of Atlanta ($1,000) and C. Stephen Wolfe II of King George ($1,000).

Pollard also received contributions from five political action committees: Virginia Trial Lawyers ($5,500) and Virginia Wine Wholesalers ($2,500), Virginia Dental Association ($1,500), Virginia Beverage Association ($1,250) and Virginia Hospital Association ($1,000).
