Two people have been charged with inflicting life-threatening injuries on a Fredericksburg man at his home Wednesday night, police said.
Charles Knauer, 29, of Thornburg, and Melissa Bryant, 29, who has no fixed address, are both charged with aggravated malicious wounding and other charges. Aggravated malicious wounding carries a possible life sentence.
The victim, a 49-year-old man, suffered severe head and facial injuries and possibly a broken wrist. He was in the intensive care unit of Mary Washington Hospital.
City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the incident occurred about 9:45 p.m. in an apartment complex in the 100 block of Wellington Lakes Drive. A neighbor told police that he came out of his apartment to check out what sounded like a fight in the victim's apartment.
The neighbor was immediately punched in the face and saw the two suspects driving away in the victim's red Jeep.
The victim was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Mary Washington Hospital while police began an investigation. Several items believed to have been used in the attack, including a screwdriver and a dining room chair were recovered.
Bledsoe said police aren't sure what led to the attack, but said it appeared to stem from a dispute involving alcohol.
Shortly after the attack, Bledsoe said, a city officer spotted the Jeep heading south on U.S. 1 about a mile beyond the city limits. He followed it to the Four Mile-Fork area, where Spotsylvania deputies assisted him in making a traffic stop in the 5200 block of Jefferson Davis Highway.
Bryant, who police said was driving, was also charged with driving while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license and larceny of a vehicle. Knauer was also charged with larceny of a vehicle.
Bledsoe said police believe the victim knew his attackers. There were other people in the apartment when the attack occurred, but apparently some of them weren't even aware that anything occurred. Bledsoe said one man was so drunk that when he was awakened, he didn't know about the fight or where he was.
Bryant and Knauer are being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

I would greatly appreciate if the FLS would find better sources and get information correct before posting it. About 50% of the information in this article is wrong. I know for a fact what happened and don't appreciate the people involved and the victims being tarnished by incorrect information.
Please email me if you have further questions.
Thank you.
