No gun in car of local man killed by Fairfax police

Date published: 11/19/2009

BY STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

Fairfax County police said yesterday that a Fredericksburg man who was shot and killed by an officer during a traffic incident Friday did not have a gun.

David Alan Masters, 52, was suspected of stealing flowers from a business on U.S. 1 in Fairfax. Police say they tried to pull him over but he wouldn't stop.

Police acknowledged yesterday that no gun was found in Masters' car.

Officials say the investigation is continuing, and that the officer involved in the shooting will be put on restricted or administrative duties when he returns to work next week. Two other officers involved have returned to normal duties.

All three officers have been interviewed by investigators.

Police have not said why one of the officers opened fire.

Masters was a self-employed cabinet maker until 2007, his family said in a statement released yesterday.

The statement said the Army veteran stopped working as the result of an injury.

He had bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack earlier this year, the statement said, and his bipolar disorder led to episodes of mania and depression throughout his adult life.

The statement said the family is awaiting the results of the investigation in hopes that it will shed some light on Masters' "senseless" death.

His survivors include: his father, a retired Army colonel living in Florida; his mother, sister and numerous other relatives in Northern Virginia; a brother in Providence; a sister in Atlanta; and a former wife and a step-daughter in the Fredericksburg area.
