COLLEGE NEWS
The following students recently gained membership in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Regimental Band, the "Highty-Tighties": Nicholas La Pietra of Stafford County, a sophomore majoring in engineering; William McWaters of Stafford, a sophomore majoring in engineering; Ryan Rodriguez of Fredericksburg, a freshman majoring in history; and Kaila Taylor of Fredericksburg, a freshman majoring in business.
The following students were recently chosen to be resident advisors at Virginia Tech for the 2009-10 academic year: Marielly Ruiz of Stafford County, a sophomore majoring in French; Joseph Rainey of Stafford, a sophomore majoring in management and Spanish; Rick Lewis of Stafford, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering; Nicholas Roberts of Stafford, a junior majoring in general engineering; Lauren Rosser of Spotsylvania County, a junior majoring in hospitality and tourism management; Marissa Rice of Spotsylvania, a junior majoring in biological sciences; Matthew Ning of Spotsylvania, a junior majoring in biochemistry; and Alessandra Brown of Spotsylvania, a junior majoring in psychology.
HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
The following students at North Stafford High School were named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program: Chelsea Barton, Rachel Damisch, Kellie Masters and Courtney Stewart. Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Senior Jordan Holland was recognized for scoring in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 black Americans who requested consideration in the 2010 National Achievement Program when they took the 2008 PSAT.
