Dred Scott decision
Dred Scott |
On March 7, 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its ruling in the case of Dred Scott vs. Sanford. Dred Scott had been a slave in Missouri before going to Illinois and Wisconsin. He claimed that since he had lived in free states, he was a free man. The Supreme Court ruled that Scott did not have a right to a trial since he was African-American and was not considered a citizen.
