Carpetbaggers
Carpetbaggers, named for their carpet-like suitcases, were people from the North who traveled to the South after the war to try and take advantage of the opportunity. They included teachers, ministers, Freedmen Bureau agents, or businessmen who tried to help the South rebuild. The southerners complained that these "carpetbaggers" were only in the South to take advantage of them, or make money.
