Freedman's Bureau

Congress established the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands after the passage of the 13th Amendment, which freed the slaves, in 1865.
It provided food, medical care, education, and other assistance to the homeless freed people in the South.
General Oliver O. Howard was given the task of running the Freedman's Bureau. The Bureau agents, sent all over the South, helped African-Americans to support themselves. The Freedman's Bureau built schools, provided legal services, and enforced federal law. Teachers by the thousands came to the south to teach in these newly created schools.
