African-Americans during the war
African-Americans had a very important role in the Civil War. They served in both Union and Confederate armies, but they were paid less than white soldiers. The Confederacy often used slaves as naval crew members and soldiers, while the Union enlisted freed blacks as sailors.
Although African-Americans were used in both armies, they were still discriminated against and served in segregated units under the command of white officers.
An example of the contribution by African-Americans was Robert Smalls, a sailor and Union naval captain, who was honored for his bravery and heroism during the Civil War. He later became a Congressman.
