Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Maryland in 1817. He escaped when he was 21 years old and created one of the first abolitionist newspapers called the North Star. He lived in Rochester, New York. In 1845, he published the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which told about the harshness of slavery, his years as a fugitive, and his triumph over hardship. Douglass wanted equality for all Americans.
