Larry Owen Phillips, 68, of Orange County died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1955 and then was commissioned in the Marine Corps where he served for 3 1/2 years.

After serving 31/2 years in the Marine Corps, Mr. Phillips began his stock-brokerage career in Lynchburg in 1959 with Francis I. DuPont. He continued in the Marine Corps Reserve, attaining the rank of captain and becoming commanding officer of Lynchburg's reserve unit.

He also opened a branch office for Wheat, First Securities in Williamsburg and a satellite office in Kilmarnock.

Mr. Phillips had retired as a stockbroker with Branch, Cabell and Co. in Richmond. An alumnus of the College of William & Mary, he was involved with the Jaycee Soap Box Derby and the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program. He also was a member of the Rotary Club, the Navy League and Orange Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lavinia Pretz Phillips; a daughter, Rebecca Lee Phillips of Stanardsville; a son, Richard Henry Phillips of Atlanta; two sisters, Sally P. Winne of Leesburg and Felicia P. Scruggs of Cullen; a brother, Kenneth Hancock Phillips of Leesburg; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at Orange Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday with burial in Rockfish Valley Baptist Church cemetery in Nelson County.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.
