Hugh Mercer Elementary

This week marks the beginning of the SOL practice sessions in all third-grade classrooms. Binders of SOL-related information were issued to the students and will begin to be incorporated into daily instruction and homework. Interested parents can obtain the released test items by logging onto the school's Web site.

The school is coordinating with the Family Life Center in the Bragg Hill community. Interested parents are welcome to contact the center or Hugh Mercer for details on providing additional tutoring and homework assistance. Other community centers providing assistance are the Hazel Hill Community Center, the Dorothy Hart Community Center and the Fredericksburg Area Boys and Girls Club.

The Hugh Mercer School Committee will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the library tonight.

Walker-Grant Middle

The SCA Variety Show is today. Students in grades four and five will view the show from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m., and those in grades six and seven will partake from 12:45 to 2 p.m. The show will take place in the cafetorium.

The School Committee will meet tonight at 7 in room 101.

The Book Fair in the library runs through Friday.

There will be a Valentine's Day Dance for students in grades six and seven from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Friday.

The honor-roll assemblies for the second nine weeks will be held on Feb. 12 at the following times:

The PTO is sponsoring an after-school enrichment program on Feb. 7, 14, and 21. Classes include: Spanish, arts and crafts, baton/pompom, tribal art, chess for beginners, picture-frame art, knitting, hip-hop dance, build a pinewood derby car and cooking. The hours are from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. Students must be preregistered and picked up promptly at 4:30.

On Valentine's Day, the kindergarten students will be inviting someone they love to spend some time from 2 to 3 p.m. with them.

The PTA's talent show will be held on March 28. Auditions for kindergarten through third graders will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, and auditions for grades four and five will be on Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The Scholastic Book Fair runs all next week. Family night will be Feb. 13 from 3:20 to 8 p.m. The Scholastic Book Fair offers popular books and educational products for all ages, including the newest titles, award-winners, classics, and interactive products from more than 150 publishers.

Papa John's Night for students in grades three through five is tonight.

Tomorrow, Helen McDonald will be honored during Counselor Appreciation Day.

Parent-teacher conference night is Feb. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m., by appointment only.

Livingston Elementary

Sandy Koch's class participated in the sixth annual Pigskin Super Bowl competition. Haley Cordle, Michelle Clarke, Jason Davis, and Corey Bowling were the class geography captains.

Andrea Hall's class also participated in the Pigskin Super Bowl competition. Alexis Harris, Daniel Legualt, Crystal Alsberry and Amber Althouse were the class geography captains.

The Student Council Association raised $50 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Scoliosis screening for all students will be done next week during physical education classes. Parents will be notified if there is a need for their child to see a doctor for further screening. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the screening, please contact Debbie Willis, school nurse, prior to Monday.

Replacement planners are available for sale in the school store for a cost of $3.

The PTO will sponsor a dance for eighth-grade students this Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. The cost for admission is $3.

The following students were chosen to compete at the state finals of the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge: sixth-grader Jacob McIntire, seventh-grader Kevin McLeod, and eighth-grader Evan Clinthorne. Evan finished fourth in the state.

The school book fair will be held through Feb. 14. The media center will be selling books, stuffed animals, posters, pens, pencils, games, and more fun stuff for students. The book fair will be open for business from 7:45 to 8 a.m. and then all day (except lunch time). It will also be open during parent-teacher conferences on Feb. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Another blood drive will be held on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m.

There will be an after-school dance for students in grades seven and eight on Feb. 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission is $3. Students attending must have a permission slip to stay and a ride home promptly at 5 p.m.

The PTA is coordinating a fund-raiser to help support several projects influencing instructional programs for the students. Discount cards for area businesses are being sold for $10.

Yearbook sales will begin on Friday and run through Feb. 14. The cost is $20.

A Valentine Dance will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. The cost is $3. Students must have a signed permission slip, and parents are asked to pick up students at 5.

The debate team recently competed in the countywide high school debate tournament held at Massaponax High School.

Seventh-grader Alexis Moore received the second place Policy Speaker Award, while the team of Ashleigh Roberson and Crystal Watters took fourth place in Policy overall.

Eighth-graders chosen to be "Student of the Week" for last week are Jasmine Smith and Stephen Bingham.

Mr. Quincy Hilliard, composer, conductor, clinician and speaker from Louisiana, will work with the band students Friday.

The Snowflake Dance, sponsored by the SCA, will be held on Feb. 12 from 2:50 to 5 p.m. Parents are asked to read the back of their child's dance ticket for the new parking and pick-up procedures.

Parent conferences are scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 13.

Monday, there will be two assemblies featuring Dylan Pritchett, Bluemont Concert storyteller. Pritchett will share African and African-American stories, riddles, games and music with the students.

Nilo Hasim placed second, Michael Haasenritter placed fourth, and Jessica Anderson received third speaker in varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Career and Technical Education Week is Feb. 10 to 15. The center and the school-to-work office will host an open house Feb. 12, 6-8 p.m.

All career and technical education programs will be represented to give parents, students and the public a chance to see student demonstrations and talk with instructors about career opportunities.

The Word of the Month for January was "acceptance." Students recognized for best demonstrating this characteristic are: Declan Goodwin in Tammy Norman's pre-kindergarten class, Zachary Sudbeck in Brenda Russell's kindergarten class, Kate Hampton in Monica Balzer's first grade class, and Isabel Steven in Pam Soper's second grade class.
