Population boom not from children of 'natives'

Date published: 2/27/2003

Mr. Charles Huthmaker says that we "will not stop growth or sprawl" because "we live longer" and "we continue to have children" ["Growth is inevitable; Spotsy village plan would help," Jan. 24].

Does the man really think that this crazy growth rate is from our children? I am 80 years old and have lived in Spotsylvania County and the city for all of my life, and I can tell you that this sprawl has nothing to do with our long lives or our children.

If that isn't obvious to Mr. Huthmaker, he can look at the statistics. The growth rate in Spotsylvania has been a whole lot higher than the birth rate. Huge housing developments like the Town of Chancellorsville draw population from other areas. They don't fill up with our children.

Dogwood Development needs to leave town and let us catch up a while from the mess already made by bringing in too many people too fast.
