DataPort scraps plans for Northern Virginia data center

(Gainesville-AP) -- A California company has scrapped its plans to build a sprawling $1.5-billion data center in the Gainesville area of Prince William County.

An official with US DataPort says company believes the prospects of selling the space would remain slim for the foreseeable future.

US DataPort announced the project nearly three years ago, amid much fanfare from the area's economic development community.

But just as DataPort was outlining its plans, the dot-com bubble that was driving its strategy began to weaken.

The blueprint for the project included plans to build ten to 20 data centers on a 189-acre campus. The data centers would have housed high-tech equipment from Internet service providers and telecommunications carriers.
