John H. Collins

John Haigis Collins, 54, of Spotsylvania County passed away at his home Monday, May 19, 2003, after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, Susan I. Collins; a daughter, Carrie R. Collins of Spotsylvania; a son, Ian R. Johnson, and a daughter-in-law, Caroline Johnson; a granddaughter, Molly Collins Johnson of Sterling; a sister, Sandra Simmons of Fairfax; and a brother, Benjamin Collins of Buckland, Mass.

John was a Vietnam combat veteran, having served in the Army from 1968 to 1969. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Originally from Connecticut, he and his family moved to this area in 1987, where he was Salesman of the Year at Oscar Tate Buick, Pontiac, Isuzu in 1988. He continued to work in the auto business until he was forced to retire due to his failing health.

John stayed with us long enough to welcome his first grandchild and watch as his daughter graduated from Mary Washington College last Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mary Washington Hospice or to Chancellor Volunteer Fire Department/Rescue Squad.

The family extends an invitation to friends to join them at the family farm Monday, May 26, Memorial Day, from noon to 3 p.m., for a casual celebration of his life and love.
