73-year-old woman hit by ambulance in triathlon
A 73-year-old woman, who many of the country's top triathletes know simply as "Marge," is listed in serious condition while recovering from injuries suffered after she was struck by an ambulance Sunday in the Colonial Beach Triathlon.
Margaret Stahl Warren of Bowie, Md., was hurt while competing during the 40-kilometer bike race, which is the second leg of the three-event competition.
State police are investigating the accident, which happened on State Route 205 about three miles west of Colonial Beach during the bicyling portion of the event. Warren was hit by a Colonial Beach Rescue Squad ambulance driven by Pat Fitzgerald, a retired school teacher and longtime volunteer and official with the squad, police said.
No charges have been filed.
The accident dislocated Warren's shoulder, broke her nose and severely injured her ankle. She is now at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Warren has competed in national and international competitions through USAT, the nation's sanctioning body for triathlons, since 1989.
