Dunn out of touch with Spotsy

Date published: 10/24/2003

Regarding Ralph Lawton's attacks on me ["Let's get the facts straight: Dunn is no extremist," Oct. 16] when trying to defend his candidate, Claude Dunn, I don't blame him: I'd say anything, attack anyone, and distort the facts, too, if I had to defend a guy like Dunn.

But let's talk facts:

Fact: Claude Dunn supported the Town of Chancellorsville, and he is now being backed by the same people and groups that fought for that project.

Fact: Dunn's tax pledge is laughable. His support of the Town of Chancellorsville shows that, in fact, he would support raising taxes, because part of the plan included imposing a tax overlay district on State Route 3--which would've raised taxes on all the small-business owners along that corridor.

Fact: Dunn opposes new county efforts to manage growth. He thinks that anything we do to manage growth infringes on the rights of a few privileged individuals who stand to benefit financially while the majority of us deal with more traffic, overcrowded schools, and a diminished quality of life.

Fact: An intelligent reading of Dunn's campaign materials indicates that his advocacy of "school choice" is just a buzz phrase for taking tax dollars away from our public schools and using them to subsidize private schools.

So the facts are very clear: Lawton's candidate, Claude Dunn, is out of touch with Chancellor District voters. He is out of the mainstream.

That is why my neighbors and I will be supporting Henry "Hap" Connors Jr. for Chancellor supervisor on Nov. 4. He represents our views, he has stood by us on the issues, and so we're standing with him. And that's a fact.
