Stafford citizens would rally for the underhog

Date published: 2/15/2004

I thought the article about the pig sitting on top of the Virginia Barbecue Co. ["Big pig makes county grunt; Eatery won't cave on sign," Feb. 9] was a little out of line. I'm sure most people never noticed the pig until the article. Now probably everyone driving by is looking for the pig.

Rick Ivey is paying rent or a mortgage, and his taxes are revenue for Stafford County.

I have to agree with Ed Greiner, who said, "There are a lot worse things to look at on the side of the road than a pig on a roof."

Kandy Hilliard must have tunnel vision. How about all the trash on the sides of the road? If she drove a little farther north about one-half mile past the crucifix, she would see on the right side of the road a duplex house with a blue tarp for a roof. How about all the junk cars at the "used car dealers"? Did she think about when Shoney's was across the street with a "Big Boy" as its display? Did all this look better than a pig on the roof of a business?

Ms. Hilliard should consider that Mr. Ivey is using a building that sat for years abandoned. People used the lot as a personal used-car lot. Now at least it is not an eyesore.

And why does she think the pig distracts from Aquia Church? The church is way up on a hill in the woods.

Stick with your plans, Mr. Ivey--appeal. I'm sure there are a lot of people in Stafford willing to back your decision.
