Have self-sacrifice and patriotism gone out of style?

With Memorial Day and the anniversary of D-Day just elapsed, I was very interested to read of the enthusiastic patriotism of the past. Several articles of that nature in The Free Lance-Star were next to articles describing the mind-numbing overdevelopment of our area, including the devastation of the irreplaceable Crow's Nest.

In years past, the ideal was the sacrifice of the few for the benefit of the many. Now, we witness the sacrifice of the many for the benefit of a few.
