"Day of rest" law correction may require special session

The "day of rest" law was meant to repeal laws that once required businesses to close on Sundays, but lawmakers struck from the books an exemption for private businesses, and Governor Warner signed it into law

(Washington-AP) -- It may take a day of work to undo Virginia's "day of rest" mess.

Delegate Brian Moran of Alexandria says lawmakers want to find the most efficient and least expensive way to correct a legislative error that almost allowed workers to ask for a weekend day off as a "day of rest."

The "day of rest" law was meant to repeal the antiquated "blue laws" that once required businesses to close on Sundays, but lawmakers unwittingly struck from the books a decades-old exemption for private businesses, and Governor Mark Warner signed it into law.

Moran says a special legislative session may be required to correct the mistake, at a cost of nearly $100,000 per day.

Moran says he would forego his per diem stipend if a special session was called, since it was lawmakers who goofed up in the first place.
