Salem District representative Marilyn Boren announced her resignation from the Spotsylvania County School Board last night.
Boren said that "after a couple of episodes that show me stress is beginning to take it's toll," she will be moving to St. Augustine, Florida to be closer to her son and grandchildren.
Ms. Boren moved to Spotsylvania County about ten years ago after retiring as a Fairfax County teacher, and began serving the first of her terms on the School Board in 1995. She told reporters that she remembers a lot of four-to-three votes during her early years, but feels the current School Board and Superintendent work well together.
"My family has been pressuring me to do this for a couple of years," Boren said. "Finally, I just realized that age is taking a toll on me."
Boren said it was "absolutely" her intention to finish her third term when elected, before she made the decision to resign.
"Even though I hate to leave," Boren said, "I feel comfortable leaving because you've got an excellent Board and an excellent Superintendent to carry on the good work."
How does she want to be remembered? "As a person who...paid attention, who did their homework and tried to make the right decisions."
Her last meeting will be September 27. Boren told reporters she'll take some time at that meeting to review some of the decisions she says she was "excited to be a part of." Her resignation is effective October 1.
School Superintendent Dr. Jerry Hill says that, according to state law, the six remaining School Board members have 45 days from the effective date of Boren's resignation to recommend someone to fill the Salem District seat.
