Christmastide at Stratford Hall was such a wonderful experience

December 22, 2004 1:08 am

Recently, several family members and I attended the Christmas Candlelight Celebration program at Stratford Hall Plantation in Westmoreland County.

The Great House was decked out with the traditional 18th- and 19th-century decorations, and the rooms were aglow with candlelight.

This year, an additional delight was Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." The historical interpreters dramatized Dickens' Christmas story throughout the Great House.

Kudos to whoever came up with that brainchild. What a fitting backdrop for Dickens' classic story and also a most fitting manner in conveying one of the true meanings of Christmas.

Appreciation is extended to the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association staff for sponsoring such a thoughtful and festive program. It was enjoyed by the young and old alike. Even old Ebenezer Scrooge himself would have been pleased.
