The images, said clairvoyant comedian Rob Sevin, are always correct.
It's just his interpretation that can be a little off, explained the 35-year-old Texas native.
Example: For one of his trademark tricks, he had a lady pick a word out of the dictionary.
"She picked Caesar, and the imagery I got was salad," Sevin said.
Close enough?
On Saturday, you'll have the chance to decide just how accurate--or believable--Sevin's magic really is.
Sevin will perform his new show, "The Clairvoyant Chronicles: Dreams, Omens and Superstitions," at the District of Columbia Arts Center in Washington.
"I open my show by stating that I'm a fake," Sevin said. He does that to put the disbelieving mind at ease.
The basis of Sevin's show is clairvoyance, which he defines as "the ability to see objects or events that cannot be perceived with the normal human senses."
His performance is a juggling act. Sevin has to find the right balance between clairvoyance and fun.
"I add a lot of quick wit," he said. "If [the clairvoyance] is too strong, it can scare people, and if it's too funny, they think it's a joke."
Sevin, who in the past has presented eight shows in Fredericksburg, describes his crowds at local venues like the Comedy Zone and Grapevine Comedy Cafe as "ex-tremely welcoming, very excited to see it and also very inquisitive," which he likes.
Saturday evening, Sevin will show off his talent in a variety of ways.
Perhaps the most risky trick he'll perform will be the acid-in-a-beaker test. Without looking, he'll drink the contents of three of four beakers--hopefully the ones not filled with hydrochloric acid.
"That's the best ending," Sevin said with a chuckle.
He noted that there would be one brand-new piece, but he wouldn't share any details.
"That's a surprise for everyone," he said.
Last week, Sevin re-hearsed with his 4-year-old daughter, Emily, as his audience.
"She likes to be the volunteer and stuff," he said.
She and Sevin's other child, 10-year-old Ian, enjoy their father's tricky ways, he said.
Although there are always skeptics, Sevin said, what he does now is a passion, and he plans to perform for as long as possible.
"If people want to see a really good show," he said, "they should come to D.C."
