From STAFF REPORTS
Reba Tutt and the Virginia Shamrocks made a bit of history last weekend by capturing the 18-under ASA Gold National softball championship last weekend at Salinas, Calif.
The Shamrocks notched their seventh victory in a row with a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Hot Shots in the finals, becoming the first club from east of the Mississippi River to win the tournament.
The Shamrocks outscored their seven opponents, 25-5.
Tutt, the team's center fielder and a rising junior at Culpeper High School, kept the Shamrocks unbeaten with a spectacular running catch in an earlier game against the Indiana Bandits.
With the score tied 2-2 at the end of seventh, the two teams went to extra innings and switched to international rules where a runner was stationed at second base to start each team's at-bat.
A Bandits hitter almost snapped the tie in the eighth with a shot over Tutt's head, but last season's Commonwealth District player of the year caught up to the ball to make the catch in front of the fence.
The Shamrocks finally won by scoring twice in the 11th inning.
Two weeks earlier, the Shamrocks placed third at the Champions Cup tournament played at Ervine.
