One man was stabbed and another went to jail following a Stafford County traffic altercation involving high beams.
Sheriff Charles Jett said the incident took place about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Joshua Road in North Stafford.
A 43-year-old county man who lives in that area was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he had surgery late Wednesday night. Information about his condition was not available yesterday.
The man accused of stabbing him, 50-year-old Samuel E. Ayers II of 10 Pleasure Court in Stafford, was charged with aggravated malicious wounding, a charge that carries a potential life sentence.
Jett said both the injured man and Ayers called the Sheriff's Office after the altercation and gave widely differing versions of what happened.
The man who suffered the stab wound said he was on his way home when another motorist passed him on a double yellow line while traveling south on Joshua Road.
He said he responded by turning on his high beams. This apparently angered the other driver, who stopped his vehicle in the middle of the road and got out to confront him, Jett said,
The man said he got out of his vehicle as well, and was stabbed in the abdomen without provocation. He got the other vehicle's tag number and asked for the other man's name as he was returning to his vehicle, Jett said.
The suspect gave his correct name, Jett said.
The wounded man drove home and reported the attack. Deputy Ben Worcester responded and noticed a deep laceration in the man's midsection.
Jett said Ayers also called the Sheriff's Office to report an attack. However, in Ayers' version of the incident, he was punched in the face.
Jett said Ayers, who had no visible injuries, denied passing on a double yellow line and denied stabbing anyone. He said he didn't have a knife at the time, Jett said.
Jett said Deputy Ben Worcester obtained a search warrant for Ayers' home and found two knives. One of them had blood on it, Jett said.
Ayers was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
