Politically correct insanity rules Spotsylvania school

No resident of Spotsylvania County can avoid passing its Civil War battlefields and cemeteries.

How can it be that a middle school principal may have to ban Confederate clothing from the building in order to prevent fighting? ["School may ban rebel wear," Sept. 28.]

Middle school students should be mature enough to debate the U.S. Constitution and Civil War issues such as secession without rancor.

Every morning they pass under a flagpole flying the same state flag used under the Confederate flag, still bearing the motto John Wilkes Booth quoted when he shot Abraham Lincoln. Should display of the state flag also be banned by public schools?

Public education requires a sense of community that cannot exist when the county's history and heritage is smothered under political correctness.

"Physically speaking, we cannot separate," said Mr. Lincoln in his first inaugural address.

"The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

Otherwise, there's always home schooling.
