Bush to help Kilgore

Bush to campaign for Kilgore.

Date published: 11/5/2005

RICHMOND--President George Bush will help Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore make a last-minute push for votes.

Kilgore's campaign confirmed yesterday that Bush will attend a rally for Kilgore and the Republican statewide ticket in Richmond Monday night.

"We are thrilled to have the support of the leader of the free world," said Kilgore spokesman Tim Murtaugh in a statement announcing Bush's visit. "The best way to fire up our voters is to have the president come into Virginia less than 12 hours before the polls open. George Bush knows how to win elections, and in a close race, this is the greatest boost we could have asked for."

Kilgore took heat last week for not attending Bush's speech on terrorism in Norfolk. At the time, Kilgore said he had other campaign events scheduled and that the speech was not a political event, so he wasn't invited anyway.

That fueled speculation that Kilgore was avoiding association with Bush, who has low approval ratings in parts of Virginia.

Evidently that's not the case.

"In a close election like this, you have to roll out your big guns," Murtaugh said. "And President Bush is our howitzer. He's the best 'get out the vote' weapon in our arsenal."

Bush's presence means the rally, originally scheduled to be held downtown, has been moved to the Richmond International Airport, and will require tickets.

It also means some juggling of Kilgore's schedule. He was originally planning to fly to Abingdon Monday night for another rally there.

The election is Tuesday.
