An area congressman has agreed to donate to charity $10,000 he received from former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty Tuesday to fraud charges.

Rep. Eric Cantor, a Republican who district includes parts of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Culpeper and Orange counties, said he would donate money to a nonprofit organization that supports residents of Richmond's poorest inner-city areas.

"The money that was donated to his campaign by Jack Abramoff and his wife is going to be given to the William Byrd Community House," said Geoff Embler, Cantor's press secretary. "[Abramoff is] guilty of several offenses so this was the appropriate action to take."

The $10,000 was given for Cantor's campaign for the House of Representatives. Embler said Cantor's staff was going through the paperwork and within the next few days would know exact figures, and "every penny" would go to the charity.

Abramoff reached a plea agreement Tuesday to help federal prosecutors in an investigation of congressmen, their aides and other Capitol Hill lobbyists, The Associated Press said.

Cantor isn't the only one turning over money he's received from Abramoff, who pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal fraud, conspiracy and tax-evasion charges.

According to the AP, elected officials have rushed to donate or return money they received from Abramoff. Among them are President George Bush, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and current Majority Leader Roy Blunt.

The AP said Abramoff and his associates and clients gave about $1.7 million in donations to about 220 members of Congress between 2001 and 2004. About 64 percent of them were Republicans.
