Teacher charged with having sex with students

Teacher charged with nine offenses involving sexual relations with two teenage students.

Date published: 3/31/2006

A Courtland High School special education teacher has been charged with nine offenses involving sexual relations with two teenage students, police said.

Bonnie Sue Davis, 35, of Spotsylvania is charged with two counts of sodomy, six counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and having sex with a child.

She was arrested late Thursday and placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail, Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Peck said.

Davis, who has worked for the Spotsylvania school system for six years, is accused of sexual misconduct with two Courtland High boys, ages 14 and 15.

She has been suspended from her teaching duties. Police say that none of the alleged activity took place at the school.

Courtland Principal Michael Bedwell said he could not comment on whether Davis will return to her post.

“There is an investigation happening,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see the outcome. I will not predict or presume what will happen down the road.”

Spotsylvania detectives searched Davis' home in the county's Ruffins Pond subdivision about 8:15 p.m. Thursday, according to paperwork filed yesterday in Spotsylvania Circuit Court.

They photographed the layout of the house and the contents of the residence, according to court documents filed by Spotsylvania Detective T.J. Bryner. Detectives suspect that the sexual activity occurred there, Peck said.

An arraignment for Davis has been set for Monday, Spotsylvania Commonwealth's Attorney William Neely said.

Neely said that Davis has hired defense attorney Phillip Sasser. Stuart Sullivan is prosecuting the case.

Educators targeted (posted by stan , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
Is this the popular thing to do, the new trend, students' accusing teachers of indecent acts? What ever happened to the days when a teacher could converse casually with a student without fear of retribution for discipline? Have we become a society in which students lack the capabilities to accept responsibility? Coutland has a reputation of excellent administration and teachers. Just because we pay taxes, we feel that we have the right to judge educators. They are college educated and deserve respect!

innocent before proven guilty (posted by hlg1797 , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
I think we are jumping to conclusions. What has happened to this world when parents can't realize that their children might be less than perfect? I have been teaching for 10 years and I have witnessed what students are capable of. I don't fault the children; I fault the parents. As parents, we should be in search of truth, no matter who is in the wrong. Special education teachers especially deal with a fragile population making their jobs harder. Teachers need to teach and parents need to parent.

courtland scandal (posted by CER , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
Just a few more lines, as parents we must stand together to protect our children and if the you felt so strong about the behavior of the teachers and stafff amongst the children then you should have pursued it further than just the PTSA-never give up on a gut feeling, especially when you are a parent and a child is involved! Finally, shame on this teacher for taking advantage of these boys--if these allegations are true her life will never be the same again as if the two boys life!

Cortland scandal (posted by CER , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
It's amazing how the blame is being thrown around everywhere except at theaccuser! She as a teacher has a responsibility to her job and students to maintain professionalism and dignity-she did none of those! We can blame adminstration but as we all know there are many things that go on behind closed doors when not at work, you have to wonder did the parents of these young boys know where they were? Suggestion if you felt so strong about your comment above you should have pursued it further-authorties?

administration not responsible (posted by SueD , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
The administration has no control over what someone does in the privacy of their home. Background checks are performed on every employee before they are hired. Were your complaints against the accused teacher? Spotsylvania County Schools employ some of the best teachers in the state and our administrators are hard working and dedicated. If your complaint to the administration was worded as poorly as your post, it may explain why it fell on deaf ears.
