By MICHAEL ZITZ
We have some of the worst traffic and highest housing costs in the nation.
But life in the Washington area just about makes up for that misery with a cultural cornucopia that includes some of the best live music in the world at some of the best places in the world to take it all in.
The Birchmere in Alexandria is considered one of the top acoustic music venues in America; the 9:30 Club in Washington one of the top small clubs to hear rock music; the Verizon Center one of the prime hosts of arena performances; and Wolf Trap virtually matchless as an outdoor venue.
Michael Jaworek, manager of the Birchmere, said: "D.C./Baltimore gets virtually all acts, big and small, due to [the area's population] size and the variety of venues and audiences here."
The following descriptions give a glimpse of some of the hottest D.C.-area venues.
l WOLF TRAP FILENE CENTER IN VIENNAWolf Trap, America's only national park for the performing arts, is in its 35th season, and it just keeps building on its sterling reputation as a place to hear great music in a beautiful rural setting.
Wolf Trap was created as a nonprofit foundation in 1966 in a public-private partnership with the Department of the Interior. Catherine Filene Shouse donated the land and used her own money to build the Filene Center, an amphitheater that opened in 1971.
Shouse recalled seeing a show in a barn in upstate New York, so she had two barns moved from that state to Virginia's Wolf Trap and reassembled in 1981 for wintertime indoor shows.
Peter Zimmerman, director of programs and production at Wolf Trap, said the Filene Center is much more cozy than the typical "shed" amphitheater.
"It's very intimate, not only for the people looking at the stage, but for the performers looking out," he said.
There are only 3,868 covered, reserved seats and 3,160 affordable general admission seats on the lawn.
Wolf Trap is the only venue that not only allows concertgoers to bring in food for picnics on the lawn during the entire performance, but also allows them to carry along their own alcohol, Zimmerman said.
Those sitting in reserved seats may not bring in food and drinks, but can have picnics elsewhere around the park before shows begin.
Shouse wanted people of all incomes to be able to come and enjoy the performing arts, Zimmerman said, so "part of our mission is to keep our ticket prices affordable."
Tickets for many of the 100 shows in roughly 100 days this summer sell for as little as $10 for lawn seats.
Another part of the Wolf Trap philosophy is "an extreme variety of performances," Zimmerman said.
In little more than one week, that range will include ABBA, Paul Anka, The Beach Boys, Trisha Yearwood, Fiona Apple, classical music by soprano Renee Fleming, "PLAY! A Video Game Symphony," "The Wizard of Oz," George Benson and Al Jarreau.
A signature annual summer kickoff event is a huge free fireworks display on May 28.
l NISSAN PAVILION IN BRISTOWSomething new has been added to the lawn, one of the most popular features at Nissan Pavilion, located near Manassas.
Nissan Pavilion, capacity 25,000, now provides a Family Zone on the general admission lawn for most events. The Family Zone is smoking- and alcohol-free. No special ticket is required and all patrons are welcome, said spokeswoman Brooke Kent.
Nissan Pavilion does not allow patrons to bring in alcohol, but does let them carry in food and bottled water.
Its edge on other "sheds" is in state-of-the-art technology, with 30- by 40-foot video screens, the largest by far of any area venue, featuring brand- new projectors with 10,000 lumens each producing crystal-clear video of the performance.
New, 9 by 12-foot LED walls adorn both plazas of the venue, allowing patrons to watch shows while on their way to the bathroom or in line for concessions.
This summer's acts include Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Kelly Clarkson, Brooks & Dunn, Dave Matthews and a pairing of Def Leppard and Journey.
l VERIZON CENTER IN DOWNTOWN D.C.Everything about Verizon Center is big.
More than 21 million people have attended more than 1,735 events at Verizon Center in its 8-year history.
In 2005, it was ranked No. 9 worldwide among venues with more than 15,000 capacity, according to Billboard magazine.
Pollstar ranked Verizon Center 31st in tickets sold worldwide that same year.
"People come to Washington to visit the monuments, the White House and the museums--but also to be entertained," said Senior Vice President of Arena Administration Gary Handleman. He said Abe Pollin, owner of the Verizon Center, added to that tradition by building the sports arena and concert venue "and revitalizing the downtown area to where it stands today, as a true downtown destination for sports and entertainment."
It's not a venue likely to please those who favor intimate rooms. Depending on concert format, Verizon Center capacity is usually between 13,000 and 19,000.
This summer's acts at Verizon range from Pearl Jam to Luciano Pavarotti to Tim McGraw & Faith Hill to Shakira with Wyclef.
l PATRIOT CENTER AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY IN FAIRFAXBest known recently as the home of the Final Four George Mason basketball team, the Patriot Center also hosts entertainment acts ranging from the kiddie band The Wiggles to Kid Rock.
"Over the past 20 years, we've provided the George Mason University, Northern Virginia and Washington area communities with quality entertainment and events ranging from basketball games to family shows to concerts to trade shows," said Patriot Center General Manager Barry Geisler.
Last year, Pollstar ranked the Patriot Center No. 51 in ticket sales worldwide, "and that's an achievement we aim to improve upon from year to year," Geisler said.
Not exactly cozy, but less overwhelming than Verizon, the Patriot Center's concert capacity ranges from 5,000 to 10,000.
In its 20-year history, the Patriot Center has seen more than 7.6 million in attendance at more than 2,400 events.
Acts range from Larry the Cable Guy to Gwen Stefani and the Black Eyed Peas to Keith Urban to Audioslave to Duran Duran.
l THE BIRCHMERE IN ALEXANDRIAEven the biggest stars consider it a treat to play the Birchmere's intimate main room, which seats 500 and can accommodate 1,000, including standing room in the bandstand area.
"I like the intimacy and communication that occurs between the artists and the audiences here," manager Michael Jaworek said.
The venue is unusual in that the first fans to arrive get the best seats up front, and patrons often are served dinner while they enjoy the show. All tickets are the same price, regardless of seating. Prices vary per performer, but are usually in the $18 to $45 range.
The Birchmere opened at its first location in an Arlington strip mall April 4, 1966. Its second home, on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria from 1981 to 1997, was just up the street from the current venue.
With each move, the club has grown, and yet retained the same no-frills, no-nonsense charm.
l THE 9:30 CLUB IN DOWNTOWN D.C.
The intimate 9:30 Club, considered one of the premier small clubs in the East, gives a capacity crowd of 800 an up-close and personal look at music's hottest and most iconic acts, including, in the coming weeks, Joe Jackson, Ice Cube and the Go-Gos.
There's very little seating. Get there early enough (doors open at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9 p.m. on weekends) and you can stand right up front.
