Mehvish Reshamwala received an award at the awards ceremony for the last grading period in computer.
The Ronald McDonald House pop tops fundraiser will continue in the fall. The pop tabs of aluminum cans will be collected and donated to the Ronald McDonald house to help buy toiletries for the families who stay there.
Porter library has free programs that encourage summer reading and keep children interested and excited about reading.

Margaret Brent Elementary
Multicultural Day was a wonderful experience. The students developed an awareness of, and an appreciation for, the similarities and differences among various cultures.
Luis Villarreal gave a wonderful presentation on the Mexican Rodeo and Mrs. Gerlach enchanted the children with stories from Puerto Rico.
First grade studied all about Hawaii and third grade "visited" Germany, Mexico, Ireland, Poland and South Africa.
Myra Garvey talked to the second-grade classes about the Philippines. She talked about culture, food and language. Suna Chang shared a PowerPoint presentation on Korean culture. She also brought snacks for the children to sample and spoke to them about the location, climate, homes, occupations, clothing, and schools in Korea.
Zoli Kerestely spoke to the fourth grades about Hungary. He shared the culture and how residents live today. He also taught the students a few Hungarian words and shared a feast of noodles with walnuts.
Grade five had a feast that included numerous ethnic dishes provided by parents of the students: an Irish Pische, Irish corned beef sandwiches, two Cherokee dishes, two traditional German farmer's dishes, Puerto Rican Sangria, a dish from Belize, Puerto Rican Sugar cookies, Canadian butter cookies, scones, German sausages, shepherd's pie and a potato dish.
The last day of school is always exciting. Fifth grade took a victory lap through the school. Kindergarten through fourth grade lined the halls to give the fifth-graders a farewell high five. Next, was a kickball game. The fifth-graders held a kickball tournament. Lisa Thornton's class won the tournament and the chance to play Margaret Brent's staff. Students had the opportunity to display their youthful talents while the staff proved to be a worthy opponent. The day ended with music playing, students and staff hugging, dancing, singing and lots of cheering from the buses including the bus drivers.

Ferry Farm Elementary
Fifth-graders at Ferry Farm attended their D.A.R.E. graduation and fifth-grade awards ceremony June 8 in the school cafeteria.
Kimberly Krentz's third-graders put on the play "Live Fairy Tale News" for other classmates and parents on June 12. The play was a news report spoofing fairy-tale characters with three commercial breaks. The play was performed in the classroom at 10, 12:30 and 2 p.m.

Fourth-grader Alyssa Nghiem won first place in the Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation Poster Contest. Her drawing will be featured on the 2006-07 calendar distributed to all schools in the state. She will also be given a savings bond.
The following fifth-graders earned the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence for earning at least a 90 percent grade-point average during fourth grade and the first semester of fifth grade and a minimum of an 85 percentile on their most recent standardized tests. Students were presented with a certificate and letter signed by President George W. Eighth-grade business classes visited MediCorp and Mary Washington Hospital as the result of a service-learning mini-grant.
Students had the opportunity to meet with a panel of MediCorp employees that represented various occupations. The panel spoke about their jobs, shared information on salary ranges, occupational duties, work hours and educational backgrounds needed.
The Human Resources Department presented a mock interview, using a candidate that demonstrated good and bad interview skills.
The students toured four different areas of the hospital including the emergency room, radiology, pharmacy and laboratories.
