Youths in Philanthropy Project distributes grants

Six local organizations have received grants from the Youth in Philanthropy Project, a part of the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region.
To be eligible, the organizations must serve the counties of Caroline, King George, Stafford, or Spotsylvania or the city of Fredericksburg.
The Rappahannock Council Against Sexual Assault received a grant of $1,000 to fund a pilot program at James Monroe High School. The program, "Teens Against Sexual Assault," will teach students how to take action against sexual violence in their community.
Local children who have recently lost a loved one will benefit from a $500 grant awarded to Hospice Support Care for the Camp Rainbow program. The camp helps children grieve and understand death.
Materials for presentations to youth about dating violence, awareness and prevention will be purchased by the Rappahannock Council on Domestic Violence with a $1,000 grant.
Positive interaction and problem solving will be learned through First Fridays Canteen activities sponsored by the Mayfield Youth Activities Committee with a $1,000 grant.
The Rappahannock Area Kids on the Block will purchase Zach, a life-size puppet, with a $1,000 grant. The puppet will be used to help educate students about health and weight through the group's "Combating Childhood Obesity and Overweight" program.
Mentoring services will be available to the youth, ages 8 to 12 years old, in Caroline County through a $500 grant to the 4-H Teen Club in the county. The program focus on high-risk youth in need of guidance outside of school.
