Mary Washington crew to stay at Lake of the Woods for another year

The University of Mary Washington crew can continue to practice and compete on Lake of the Woods' main lake through next spring.

"We have extended an invitation to the Mary Washington rowing team to use our lake for another year," Lake of the Woods Association President Neil Buttimer said at yesterday's board of directors' meeting.

"We were assured last year would be the last they would need to use the lake, but they've had trouble finding a permanent location or even another temporary location," he said. "They think they may have found a place on the river, but it's going to take time to get the permits and the building finished."

The agreement with the crew will run through May 2007.

The vote to approve the agreement was 4-2, but no residents voiced opposition to the crew using the lake.

LOW Director Eldon Rucker said he could not support the agreement because the Lake Users Committee had asked the board to forward to the committee a completed request form from UMW before voting.

Director Ginny Thoms voted against the agreement because she felt that, although LOW had been accommodating, "it's time for it to end."

General Manager John Bailey told board members that the university had submitted all the required paperwork, including a certificate of insurance.

UMW crew coach Phil Schmehl said he was "very, very pleased" with the board's decision.

"The community has been more than generous allowing us to practice and compete on the lake," he said. "Without their support, we probably wouldn't have a team."

In other action, the directors unanimously approved two contracts totaling $37,400 with engineering firm Dewberry & Davis. One contract, for $15,000, will fund extra design work for the floor of the existing spillway.

The second, for $22,400, will pay for all the design work necessary to start building a flood wall between the clubhouse beach and the clubhouse swimming pool.

Final plans must be approved by the state Soil and Water Conservation Board at its September meeting. The flood wall must be completed by February 2007.
