So the people--the Democrats, anyway--of Connecticut have spoken and chosen Ned Lamont as their nominee for the U.S. Senate ["Lieberman toppled in primary," Aug. 9]. The reaction of the loser speaks volumes about what is wrong in politics today. In a normal world, Sen. Joseph Lieberman would graciously thank the people for the opportunity to have served them, regret their decision to replace him, and quietly move into post-elected life. Not this Joe. His ego and his outright arrogance blind him to any other possibility but that the people, the voters he supposedly trusts and reveres, must be saved from their choice. Only he knows what is best. The will of the people be damned, he will save them even if they don't want him. This is the same arrogance that gets us into situations like the war in Iraq. It is no wonder Sen. Lieberman fails to see the futility of our involvement there. It is no wonder the people of Connecticut have rejected his hubris. I can only hope Sen. Lieberman will reconsider his decision to leave his party and run as an independent. Nothing good can come of his trying to destroy the Democratic Party in order to save his career.
