Class-A Savannah outfielder Christopher French was arrested and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature after a fight in Charleston, S.C. Monday.
According to police reports, French hospitalized a man after hitting him three times outside a Charleston restaurant. Both men were intoxicated at the time of the fight, according to the Associated Press.
"We are still finding out information bit by bit as to what happened," Nationals farm director Andy Dunn said. "We'll make a determination once he is free and once we know exactly what happened."
Dunn said French broke the team's curfew during the incident, which took place around 1:40 a.m.
French, 22, was a 21st-round selection in June's draft out of New Mexico Junior College (Hobbs, N.M.) and was promoted to Savannah from the Gulf Coast League Saturday.
Though first baseman Larry Broadway won't be participating in the Arizona Fall League, the Nationals have announced the rest of the franchise's representatives in the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League.
Outfielder Kory Casto will be joined by shortstop Seth Bynum and relievers Brett Campbell, Devin Perrin and Roy Corcoran. At least one more pitcher will be added to the list, Dunn said.
Highly-touted pitching prospect Collin Balester was promoted to Double-A Harrisburg and started yesterday for the Senators. He allowed two runs and five hits in six innings against Akron.
Balester, a 20-year-old right-hander, was named the team's top pitching prospect last winter by Baseball America. He was 4-5 with a 5.19 ERA at Class-A Potomac.
Right-hander Shairon Martis, the 19-year-old pitcher acquired from the Giants for Mike Stanton last month, was called up to Potomac after going 1-1 with a 3.80 ERA in four starts in Savannah.
Class-A Potomac right-hander Clint Everts has been placed on the disabled list with soreness in his right elbow and is not likely to pitch again this season.
Everts, the fifth pick of the 2002 draft out of Cypress Falls High School in Houston, had ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow in 2004 and missed most of last season. He was 5-10 with a 6.00 ERA in 20 outings this season. He walked 53 batters in 90 innings, giving up 96 hits and striking out 93.
