EMBERS OF A national organization called Laborers for Christ are helping build Peace Lutheran Church.
The 26-year-old program is made up of retired people who volunteer to build churches for congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
The construction of Peace Lutheran Church on State Route 3 has drawn eight couples to King George County from places as near as Pennsylvania and far as Texas. They are staying in RVs in Colonial Beach. Laborers for Christ will stay through the end of October.
"The way I look at it, when we were working, we worked for a boss," said Fred Botzenhart, 69, project manager for the Peace Lutheran project. "Here we're serving other people and trying to help them so we can spread the Gospel. We just work for a new boss: Jesus Christ."
For Harold Bellow, 67, who is Botzenhart's assistant, this is the first project of the four he has taken part in nationwide that involves constructing a church, rather than just building additions.
"Looks like [King George is] having a church explosion," said Bellow, who came here with his wife, Linda, on Memorial Day.
