Radio stations lose longtime personalities

Morning personalities Penny Wack of WFLS and Rich Creeger of WWUZ leave Fredericksburg airwaves

Two Fredericksburg morning radio personalities left local airwaves yesterday.

Penny Wack ended a 13-year run at WYSK and WFLS and Rich Creeger of WWUZ ended a five-year stint.

Wack co-hosted the WFLS morning show with Brian Strobel for the past six months. She started as a newswoman at WYSK and WFLS.

Creeger was the original morning man at WWUZ.

The stations are part of the Star Radio Group, owned by The Free Lance-Star.

Of her plans for the future, Wack joked, "I'm going to sleep," She had to start her work day at 4 a.m. for the last seven years.

Wack and her husband, John, own the Fredericksburg Field House and have a 5-year-old daughter, Caroline, and an 18-month-old son, Jake.

"I think she decided getting up at that hour was too much to handle with a young family," said Paul Johnson, operations manager for the Star Radio Group.

Johnson called Wack "bright, cheerful, energetic--everything you want in a morning personality."

Creeger has taken a job with a station in Harrisburg, Pa. He was born in Washington, but grew up in Harrisburg and still has family there. "It's kind of like going home," he said.

"I'm very excited about it," Creeger said. "I had a great time at 96.9 [WWUZ], and I really appreciated the opportunity I had there."

WWUZ is a classic rock station and the Harrisburg station is country.

Johnson said Creeger "is just an interesting guy to listen to--he has an interesting take on world events on popular culture and he really forged a deep bond with a lot of his listeners, and that's hard to do in this day and age, with so many things competing for your attention."

He said the company hasn't made a decision on replacements for Wack and Creeger.
