Local trails deserve boost from General Assembly reps

Date published: 11/3/2006

Plans recently announced to expand walking trails in the area need to get broad support from the business, civic, cultural, education, and health-care leadership here ["Paths get regional support," Oct. 20].

Local, state, and federal officials need to be encouraged to invest in such a system over time, so we can join other communities--such as Blacksburg, Charlottesville, and Radford--that provide wonderful walking trails for residents and visitors.

A trail system would offer the community another attraction for health-minded residents and tourists who would take advantage of it.

I would hope trails along both banks of the Rappahannock River at Ferry Farm upriver beyond Celebrate Virginia could be included in this plan.

State participation in funding such a system is vital for the success of this project.

I hope the local members of our General Assembly delegation will take a lead in making this plan become a reality.
