A closer look at Aquia
Officials discuss ways to enhance Aquia Landing Park.

Date published: 11/14/2006

It's often referred to as Stafford County's best-kept secret. Some county officials want to make Aquia Landing Park more popular.

Last month, Supervisor Paul Milde met with county employees to brainstorm ideas on making the riverfront park more attractive to beachgoers.

The park is at the northern end of Brooke Road, where Aquia Creek meets the Potomac River.

"We just talked about a lot of activities and services we could bring to the park," said county spokeswoman Cathy Riddle. "Aquia Landing is just a great place."

One of the ideas was to extend the season. Right now, it's open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Riddle said they also talked about having the beach open earlier in the day and stay open longer.

And ways to provide potable water also were discussed.

"This is the very preliminary phase," Riddle said. "All this stuff is just under discussion right now."

Several more meetings will be scheduled in the future, and the public will be invited to make suggestions on how to improve the park.

Nicole Krafsure visited the beach many times this past summer, and had a lot of ideas on how it could be a better park.

"They definitely need some better refreshments out there," she said.

The county from time to time has had vendors selling refreshments, but Krafsure suggested a regular snack bar, and some awnings for shade.

She also is in favor of building a small fishing pier, and maybe even a wooden float for kids to play on. "I've seen those things at other river beaches," she said.

She said the county should expand the area where people are allowed to swim, and provide more activities for kids.

"It's really an adorable place," she said. "So peaceful. All they need to do is make it more comfortable."

About 3,000 people visited the beach last season.
