New Culpeper County map in the making
The Friends of the Culpeper County Library are seeking updated information for a new Culpeper County map.
The group has commissioned historian Eugene Scheel to update the map he drew in 1975 for the Second National Bank.
Anyone with information about old cemeteries, monuments, historical markers or old houses is asked to provide that information to the library.
Citizens can leave the information either at the library, which is at 271 Southgate Shopping Center, or they can mail the information to the library or e-mail it to Email: cclva@cclva.org.
For details, call Susan Keller at 540/825-8691.
Seven grants awarded by community foundation
The Youth in Philanthropy Project, a youth-driven program of the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, awarded seven grants within the region. The program is dedicated to teaching youth about philanthropic giving; the value of nonprofit organizations; and the impact of community outreach.
All grants were awarded in December on a competitive basis. The youth steering committee is ultimately responsible for deciding how to best distribute their funds. Priority was given to applicants that involve youth in every aspect of fulfilling their project, and to those projects that the committee feels will utilize its grant dollars to have the greatest possible impact on the community.
Award-winners:
Post Oak Middle School's Interact Club was awarded $300 for a project which will provide students with disabilities an opportunity to interact with peers (with and without disabilities) to develop and refine appropriate social skills needed to be effective citizens. During club hours they have homework help and create projects to donate to other organizations.
The Children's Bereavement Program at Hospice Support Care was awarded a $500 grant to create a monthly newsletter and scrapbook which will help young children with the grieving process.
Fredericksburg Counseling received a $600 grant to provide group therapy at Hope House which will teach elementary-age children the concept of resiliency. The program is designed to demonstrate insight, independence, relationships, initiative, humor and creativity to all members.
Bethany Christian Services was awarded a $600 grant to help provide short-term material support for newborns including diapers, formula, clothing, portable cribs and car seats.
Greater Fredericksburg SPCA received a $1,000 grant to help purchase a T-kennel for its new Humane Care Center
Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded a $1,000 grant for its King George "Bigs and Littles" program. The members will work toward beautifying the grounds of three elementary schools and a middle school in King George County.
The Students for Environmental Action club at James Monroe High School was awarded $1,000 to design and build a rain garden with community involvement at the Bragg Hill Family Life Center. The project will also provide an educational tool for students and schools in the area and to make youth in the area more environmentally aware and proactive.
Any organizations that would like to apply for a grant or become a youth grantmaker can contact the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region at 540/373-9292, or send an e-mail to Email: cfrrr@midatlanticbb.com.
Volunteers create Christmas feast
On Christmas morning, several people in King George County got a holiday treat at the King George citizens center. Volunteers whipped up a Christmas feast and celebration for those who wouldn't have had one otherwise. Russell Farmer organized the event, which included Santa Claus and an elf.
Many King George businesses and residents helped make the event possible.
The group that created the holiday treat plans to organize a nonprofit agency to continue to help out those in King George who have run into hard times.
