Send-off for Guard troops was a wonderful display

It was a heartwarming occasion to see the downtown streets lined with residents who had come to cheer on the local National Guard troops who were leaving for Iraq ["Guardsmen head out," Jan. 8].
Children and adults, waving flags and signs of good wishes, clapped as the buses rode by.
This is the last chance for the soldiers to see a hometown on their way to Fort Dix and on to Iraq.
It was a fitting tribute to them and a great way to send them on their way, knowing their town supports them.
Whether or not you agree with the war, these soldiers are leaving their families and normal lives for more than a year. We need to let them know that we appreciate their sacrifice.
Thanks to everyone who turned out last Sunday, and let's plan to meet downtown again next year to give them the welcome home they deserve.
Continue to support them and to let them know we care.
