>> SINGER-SONGWRITER PROMISES 'PURE ENTERTAINMENT' JOSH KELLEY REFLECTS: 'MY JOB ROCKS'

Singer-songwriter Josh Kelley has played the Birchmere twice--and sold it out twice--so he looks forward to returning on Saturday

Josh Kelley has a special place in his heart for the Birchmere.

A singer-songwriter who backs up his scruffy pop-rock with soulful vocals, Kelley has played the Alexandria venue twice--and sold it out twice--so he looks forward to returning on Saturday, he said in a phone interview this week.

He plans to try out a new band there, although he wasn't yet sure if he'd bring a three-, four- or five-piece with him.

"Either way, it's gonna be pure entertainment," he said with a slight laugh. His voice sounded a little rough, as if he might have had a cold. Turns out he had a different excuse.

"If I sound a little nasally, me and my girl went to the SAG Awards last night, and I got completely wasted," he said.

His "girl" is actress Katherine Heigl, who plays Izzie Stevens on the smash TV drama "Grey's Anatomy." The pair became engaged last year, and they plan to marry in December.

Despite his after-party indulgences, Kelley didn't seem much worse for the wear, and he was planning to meet up with a friend later that day to write some songs. Sounds like a pretty good day.

"My job rocks," Kelley said. "My job is whatever I make of it."

A big part of his job is touring, which he absolutely loves.

"I love getting in front of people and entertaining," he said. "That's what I've done my entire life, even when I was a little kid."

Kelley, who turned 26 Tuesday, began playing drums at age 10 and moved on to guitar, bass, piano and harmonica. He released his third album, "Just Say the Word," last year on his own label after recording CDs in 2003 and 2005 for Hollywood Records. That label signed him after he contacted a representative through the file-sharing application Napster.

He had a good relationship with Hollywood, he said, but starting his own label made sense not only from a financial perspective--Kelley makes a ton more money from each album sold than he did under his previous deal--but because he now has complete freedom to create.

"If tomorrow I want to put out a record of Frank Sinatra standards, I can," he said.
