Sudanese refugee to speak on the crisis in Darfur

Date published: 2/10/2007

VICTIM OF SUDANESE CRISIS TO VISIT UMW

A Sudanese refugee and activist will speak at the University of Mary Washington tonight.

Mohamed Yahya grew up in the Darfur region of Sudan. He created the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy after the Sudanese militia decimated his village in 1993.

A key mission of Damanga, now based in Charlottesville, is educating people about the crisis in Sudan.

"Still the killing is going on, still the raping of women and girls is going on," Yahya said. "There is a lot to tell about Darfur, really, and the time is not enough."

Yahya travels the United States speaking about the ongoing conflict and how the rest of the world can help. A new UMW group, Students Stopping the Trafficking of People, invited him to the campus.

The public can hear Yahya in Lee Hall Ballroom at 5:30 p.m.
