Spotsylvania County authorities were picking through 127 tons of trash at
the Livingston Landfill Sunday, searching for a body. A human foot was found
by landfill workers cleaning the tracks of a loader at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The appendage has been sent to the state forensics laboratory in Richmond
for examination.
"The only thing we know at this time is that it is a left foot," said
Sheriff Howard D. Smith.
Smith said over 35 people were searching the dump Sunday, including
county police, fire and rescue personnel and volunteers.
The 127 tons of trash had been delivered Saturday.
"This will take a few days to complete," Smith said of the search.
As of late this afternoon, officials were still searching with heavy machinery, rakes and also by hand.
The foot was found by a worker at the landfill, who initially thought it was part of a mannequin. He soon realized it was a human body part and called a supervisor, who told him to call 911.
Officials couldn't tell if the foot belonged to a male or female or what race or age the victim was.
"We do know it was sawed off just at the ankle," Sheriff Howard Smith said. He said it appeared to be a clean cut.
He said he did not believe it was the result of a medical amputation.
George Kartoudi, who owns the 208 Variety Store about a mile from the landfill in Brokenburg, said he was surprised and scared after hearing of the discovery.
"I hope they find out what happened and who it is," he said.
At Pizarro's Store in Snell, Joanne Pizarro said the discovery is one more sign of some negative changes growth has brought to the area.
"It's horrific," she said. "You hate to hear something like that. It's just a changing environment. It never was like that before."
