Devin K. Goins

Devin Kari Goins of Spotsylvania County died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at the Medical Center of Virginia, Richmond. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church.

Survivors include her loving, devoted mother, Deborah Accardo of Spotsylvania; her father, Richard Goins of Tappahannock; maternal grandmother, Genevieve Accardo of Orange; one brother, Dane Alexander Accardo; two sisters, Jordan Taylor Ross and Autumn Goins; aunts and uncles, Tamar Accardo-Jones of Virginia Beach, Paul Accardo of Charlottesville, Andrew Accardo of Northville, Mich., and Arthur Accardo of Orange; numerous cousins; her long-time nurse, Gladys Smith; and other nurses, all who were like family.

Devin, though 15 years old, was as a young child of 2, and her beautiful blue eyes reflected her status as a pure child of God--only innocence resided there, only love reflected there. She loved to listen to music, encouraged by her mother and the spirituals sung by her favorite nurse. She was a strong child and would grab onto anything as if her life depended on it--whether it be someone who was trying to get around her wheelchair unscathed, the corner of the tablecloth on which rested an entire set table with a hot meal, or an unsuspecting person's hair--she would grab and pull. A reflection, perhaps, of the tenacity and fight with which she held on to life. Now liberated from her cocoon, she is free to endlessly run through heavenly fields with the butterflies, most likely playfully grabbing someone's hair.

A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, with the Rev. John J. Riley officiating. Burial will be private.
