Don't blame the South for Abe Lincoln's war
I have four comments concerning Daniel Augustine's letter to the editor ["Let's not misrepresent Abraham Lincoln, OK?" Feb. 20].
First of all, there was not an insurrection in the South. The Southern states simply seceded and wished to be left alone, as Jefferson Davis so eloquently stated.
Second, Lincoln's armies did indeed "lay waste to our land," as the burned houses and barns throughout the Shenandoah Valley well attested.
On top of that, approximately 50,000 Southern civilians of all colors died because of this invasion.
Next, his statement that the Civil War was fought over slavery is best rebutted by the following two quotes from Dickens and Marx.
"The Northern onslaught upon slavery was no more than a piece of specious humbug designed to conceal its desire for economic control of the Southern states."--Charles Dickens.
"The war between the North and the South is a tariff war. The war is further not for any principle, does not touch the question of slavery, and in fact turns on the Northern lust for sovereignty."--Karl Marx
Finally, although the South did fire first, this was cleverly induced by Lincoln, as this quote will show.
"You and I both anticipated that the cause of the country would be advanced by making the attempt to provision Fort Sumter, even if it should fail; and it is no small consolation now to feel that our anticipation is justified by the result."--Lincoln, in a letter to Gustavus Fox on May 1, 1861.

"Sir, we congratulate the American people upon your re-election by a large majority." Karl Marx to Lincoln, Jan.
28,1865. In the same letter Marx said the European communist were with him. 3000 American communist that fought in the Spanish civil war on the side of the communist were called the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
The communist in NY city use to have annual "Lincoln-Lenin Day" parades. So, is GOUSA now a fan of Marx?
Or should he "read real books" before attacking others?

I would like to congratulate Mr Townsend on a well written and truth filled post. Having being born and raised in the Illinois, I have had lincoln the myth crammed down my throat all my life. The truth be known he couldnt carry the larger part of this state when he ran for election. Also as a Kaw/Osage American Indian , I am very much aware of his planned genocide of the first people here. He despised the Indians and made no secret of that fact. He was buffoon that joked his way to the presidency
Other states, including New Jersey and New York, considered secession at the same time. Lincoln responsed by having the New York governor arrested and held without trial for the duration of the war.
Secession is "un-American"? Charges of treason against Jefferson Davis were dropped because his planned defense was that secession was legal. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes admitted "secession is probably legal" under the Constitution.

He had to. States trying to leave the Union - sorry, but that is un-American. That is why Uncle Billy Sherman laid waste to South Carolina - they deserved it. He left many places in Georgia in-tact. Dimwitted hayseeds need to get over it.
People....people! I have the answer! GWB must have gone back in time, told Abe Lincoln that Jeff Davis had WMD's and Abe bought it, lied to the whole Union, convinced them that JefF Davis was in cahoots with Al-Qaida, and going to make "nucular" weapons. Then, on his way back, he stopped in South Carolina at the Thurmond-Sharpton Plantation, and made sure all was in good order there. It's obvious that eventually it will all be Bush's fault.....may as well agree on it now!
