UMW faculty leaders hope Frawley returns
UMW's faculty senate shows its support for President William Frawley

BY JEFF BRANSCOME Two University of Mary Washington faculty leaders said they would support President William Frawley's return from paid leave under the right circumstances. Professors Stephen Fuller and Mary Rigsby also expressed concern for Frawley and his family in a letter sent to the board of visitors yesterday on behalf of UMW employees. Fuller, who is the president of the faculty senate, said he didn't consult with any other professors about the note but assumes most would support it. Last week, Frawley was charged with driving under the influence in both Fairfax County and Fredericksburg. He's been at Mary Washington Hospital since his Fredericksburg arrest on Wednesday, but is no longer in the intensive care unit, a UMW spokeswoman said. The university's board of visitors placed him on indefinite paid leave last Thursday and will likely take up the matter again during its regular meeting on Friday. Frawley's attorney, Phillip Sasser, did not comment. A MWH receptionist told The Free Lance-Star yesterday that they have no record of Frawley being there. "Any patient can request not to have their name" on the public patient list, said hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Allenbaugh. Fairfax police plan to serve a warrant on Frawley when he gets out of the hospital, a police spokeswoman said yesterday. In their letter, Rigsby and Fuller said "we are all anxious to know more about his condition." They then praise Frawley's professional accomplishments, saying he has motivated faculty to "think creatively and productively. "If circumstances allow, we will welcome him back to see these various initiatives to completion," they wrote. "We extend our best wishes for his full recovery and our sympathy to his family in this difficult time." In a telephone interview, Fuller said he's not ready to "judge the man" until all the facts come out. "We don't know anything, and that's why I'm reticent to say much," he said. University Rector Bill Poole said he gave Frawley a "courtesy call" yesterday. He said he still doesn't know the specifics of Frawley's medical condition. As a parent of a UMW senior I was disappointed in Mr. Frawley's actions. The high standards that must be maintainted by the students leave virtually no room for error on their part. I am hopeful that these incidents are treated similarily by the school and authorities.

Would you all support me if I drove drunk through the heavy traffic in Fredericksburg and maybe killed your mom, dad, brother, sister, or your children OR maybe your whole family at once? Would you pay me while I lay in the hospital wonder who I might have killed or who I'll kill the next time I drive drunk? Me...I'm just the average tax payer. I'm not the president of anything. But if I'm a drunk and I drive, you better believe I will pay the price. How about you?

As a professor at UMW, I think it is important to note that many of us at the university do not share in the opinions of Professors Fuller and Rigsby in their email of support for Frawley and their hope that he returns to his post. While one may not want to rush to judgement, so too should one not rush to support someone who might be a serial drunk driver. Had Professors Fuller and Rigsby actually consulted the UMW faculty, they might understand this. Who's the leader and who's the follower here?

The bottom line is that this man.. this educator.. this supposed role model broke the law and he gets to be on paid leave while he recovers. What if he had killed someone? Maybe he is good at his profession but he certainly lacks the common sense needed to lead. What an example he has set. EVERYONE... REFUSE THAT BREATHALYZER. ROLL YOUR CAR. AND GET PAID FOR IT ALL!!!!
