Drug-free should also include alcohol

Here's a sobering idea: Bring back Prohibition

Date published: 6/1/2007

ST. LOUIS Cardinals relief pitcher Josh Hancock was killed in an automobile accident. Reports indicate that his blood-alcohol content was almost twice that of the legal limit in Missouri.

Hancock's father is now suing the restaurant that served him drinks.

University of Mary Washington President William Frawley is hit with two driving-under-the-influence citations in as many days and loses his job.

Paris Hilton is going to jail following a DUI conviction.

We can no longer tolerate such incidents. The time for action is now! We must outlaw alcohol.

That's right, Prohibition Round 2. And this time we make it stick. Out with the "fruit of the vine" and the devil's brew! We need to shoot for a 100 percent sober America.

We are a nation that seeks to be drug-free, yet we tolerate alcohol, the most dangerous drug of them all. Why? Because it is socially accepted.

Well, so is marijuana among some segments of society, but we still arrest people for smoking pot.

We need to do the same with alcohol. Get whiskey, wine and beer off the shelves and out of the reach of Americans who get hooked on it.

Did you know that driving under the influence of alcohol is the most frequently committed crime in America? That's a sad fact that leads to deaths and injuries.

According to recent statistics, 347 people died in Virginia in 2005 as a result of alcohol-related vehicle crashes.

Nationwide, 16,885 perished on our highways that same year because of drunken drivers. That's more than five times the number of Americans who perished in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In this respect, alcohol could be labeled a weapon of mass destruction.

Alcohol is one of the leading causes of divorce in this country and drinking leads to the loss of innumerable jobs.

Alcohol makes people drunk and foolish, causing them to embarrass themselves and commit acts they normally wouldn't.

Alcohol can be blamed for many unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of venereal disease because couples sometimes get so drunk they don't know what they are doing.

Drinking leads to fights that result in death and injury. Drunks fall off bridges and into the paths of automobiles and trains.

And just last week, a teenager in Maryland died of alcohol poisoning.

Where do we draw the line? (posted by Jeff_B , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
Watching television causes apathy. Video games teach children violence. You can choke on steak if you don't chew it enough. Cats cause allergies. Stoves are hot and can burn you. Words are sometimes offensive. All of these things should be banned...? Whatever happened to responsibility? Whatever happened to self-control? Banning guns will not stop people from killing...it will just stop people from using guns to kill. You need to fight the illness, not just treat the symptoms.

Satire or Not (posted by patrick4hp , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
This letter pretty much ignores the toll drug addiction and alcoholism or any type of addiction takes on society. And trust me, it's one of the questions I am going to ask God when I get to heaven, why did all this stuff happen anyway? My solution, legalize it all, and then, if someone goes out of their own home or drives and gets caught, a mimimum sentence of 30 days for the first offense, a year for the next offence, and also tax the hell ouf of it. Do drugs, you must be sober afterwards.

Free Zones and Freedom (posted by Rodndor , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
Drug Free Zone means nothing in the realities of life. Alcohol Free Zone is equally meaningless. After interviewing college students in a Drug Free Zone, it was found that the Drug Free Zone was anything but. The same can be said of Gun Free Zones. The later with the defensless dying. The inanimate object is not the issue, but the actions of the individual. Provide the information necessary for citizens to make informed choices, then hold them accountable for their harms commited against others.

Fairly unimaginative.. (posted by Anthony_G , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
Satire it may be, but is it original? Nope. The point of any sarcasm/satire piece is to at least be funny to those who make up the target audience. This whoever is thoroughly dry and devoid of any wit. Advice to writer - don't quit your day job to write comedy, Jon Stewart you are not.

I Weep For Mankind... (posted by Lizard , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
...having read most of the replies. If you people are too stupid to recognize satire and sarcasm without lots of little smiley faces, you are too stupid to sustain a democratic society which relies on an educated and literate populace. I'll bet you also think John Swift wanted people to eat babies. What the frack are they teaching kids in school these days? Oh yeah -- "Self esteem". Feh.
