Input from friends and acquaintances in his Aquia Harbour neighborhood about the state of local politics and their concerns for the area has led Bob Woodson to a career-changing conclusion.

"It's clear that change is necessary in the Griffis-Widewater area," he said.

And he wants to be the one to initiate it.

Woodson, 67, is trying to make a formal entry into local politics by running for the Griffis-Widewater Board of Supervisors seat. He will face Independent Jack Cavalier, who is finishing his second term.

A Stafford resident since 1988, Woodson has never held elected office, but is active in the Stafford County Democratic Party. Both an economist and urban planner by training, he feels he has a "unique perspective" on the problems facing Stafford County.

"Taxes, traffic, and growth" was his mantra in a recent interview. Specifically, combating the steady increase in property taxes, addressing intensifying traffic woes, and promoting sustainable growth through diverse development.

Another source of concern for Woodson is the state of local waterways, which he hopes to correct through stronger environmental regulations.
